Everyone experiences loss at some point in their life. The aftermath of that loss can be upending. For many, the path forward seems impossible. How do I go on without them?
Grief can also occur when there are other types of losses, like loss of a career, loss of a home or neighborhood, loss of a physical ability or a hobby. And it can show up in many ways—sadness, numbness, anger, guilt, anxiety, difficulty focusing or the need to numb. It also often changes over time and may not follow a predictable path.
Grief counseling is not about "moving on" or letting go. It's about finding a way to help your new life grow up around the loss, helping it eventually become less focused on the loss and more focused on living. Together, we work on coping with the new "life-without." We focus on dealing with the emptiness left by the loss, finding a new sense of who you are now, coping with the changes that occur in your relationships due to the loss, and building a new sense of meaning on your own.
